CHARLOTTE, N.C. — City Council cleared the way Tuesday night for Publix to build a new store directly across from the Harris Teeter store in the Cotswold neighborhood.

Plans call for the demolition of an office building to make way for the Publix, and the developer hopes to begin demolition by the end of 2015.

Shoppers at Harris Teeter had mixed reactions Tuesday. Some said they will stay loyal to Harris Teeter, but others said the competition can only help. If there is a concern, it’s over traffic.

“That's probably the biggest problem,” Stephanie Taylor said as she loaded groceries into her car.

Developers are promising to put a median in part of Randolph Road and build a private street connecting Randolph to the street behind the store to help with traffic. Planning commissioners passed the proposal unanimously and sent it to city council for Tuesday’s vote.
