Stephen Tyrone Blackwell, Sr. age 69, transitioned from this earthly life after he was called home by God on Saturday, July 8, 2023, after a short illness.
He was born on August 10, 1953 to the late John T. Blackwell, Jr. and Mary D. Blackwell, in Norfolk, Virginia. He was also preceded in death by his brother Andrei V. Blackwell, and Stepmother Shirley B. Blackwell.
Stephen was a graduate of Cradock High School and also attended Norfolk State University. After spending four years in the Air Force, he went to work for Ford Motor Company’s Norfolk Assembly Plant where he worked in the Paint Department until his retirement in 2007.
Stephen accepted Jesus Christ in his life at an early age and became a member of Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chesapeake for several years. He later joined The Way, the Truth, and the Life Church at its inception in 2008, and remained a member until his passing.
Stephen was a dedicated father who loved his four boys. He was also a people person and had many friends. He had a warm heart and a friendly personality, and could strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He was also a very generous person, and was willing to help anyone he could.
He leaves to cherish his memories, four sons, Stephen T. Blackwell, Jr. of Portsmouth, Aaron V. Blackwell (Kiara), Chesapeake; Aldwin O. Blackwell, Marion, VA; Sterling T. Blackwell, Portsmouth. Two grandsons, Jace T. Blackwell and Samuel T. Blackwell.
Two brothers, Rev. John T. Blackwell, II (Johnese); and Reginald S. Blackwell Sr., Portsmouth. Two nephews, John T. Blackwell, III (Inda), Suffolk; Reginald S. Blackwell, Jr. Portsmouth. Two nieces, Shawnta R. Blackwell and Tiffany N. Blackwell, Atlanta GA; and a host of cousins and friends.
Stephen is also survived by Vanessa Blackwell, his former wife of 19 years and special friend.
Special thanks to his devoted caregivers Cathleen and Jackie, who served him so graciously.
